Windows ME


Setting up Internet Explorer 5.0x in Windows ME Please be aware that there are many different versions of operating systems out there. The following instructions are designed as a guide, and may not be exactly as they appear on your computer.

  • To find out if you are using Internet Explorer 5.0, click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. If the Internet icon looks like a blue "e" with a hammer, you are using Internet Explorer 5.0.
  • Double click on the Internet Options icon in the Control Panel. This will open the Internet Properties window.
    Click on the Connection tab.
  • Click on the "Setup..." button to open the Internet Connection Wizard to begin setting your computer up.
  • Select the third option, "I want to set up my internet connection manually..."
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • On the next screen, select the first option, "I connect through a phone line and modem".
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • The next step is to create a dial-up connection to Inter.net
  • Below "Telephone number" enter your full 10 digit local dial-up number in the telephone number field, no dashes, no spaces.
    Be sure to remove the tick from the box next to Dial using the area code and country code.
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Your username and password were given to you by Inter.net Canada when you arranged your connection. Enter your full username and password in the proper fields.
    NOTE: Your user name must be entered using small caps only. Also, you need to enter your password into the Password box. Note that for security reasons your password is displayed as a series of *'s on the screen. NOTE: Your password must be entered using small caps only as well.
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • In the Connection Name field type in the name: Inter.net
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • The next step in the setup process is setting up an e-mail account
    Select the option Yes
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Type in your real name in the Display name box, for example: Joe Bloggs
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Enter your e-mail address in the E-mail address field. Your e-mail address is your username followed by "@ca.inter.net".
    For example: joe@ca.inter.net
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Make sure that the first box on the screen contains POP3. In the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server box, type in: pop.ca.inter.net. Similarly, in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type in: smtp.ca.inter.net
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Enter your username in the Account name field. Also, you need to enter your password into the Password box.
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Click on the "Finish" button to save the Internet Connection Wizard settings.
    You have successfully created a dial-up connection and an e-mail account.
  • Create a shortcut on your desktop:
    Open "My Computer" Open "Control Panel" Open "Dial-up Networking" RIGHT click "Inter.net" and choose "create shortcut" Click "Yes" to the pop-up window.
  • Now you can open the shortcut on the desktop and press connect. Once connected, simply open Internet Explorer (the big blue 'e') and go to webpages.

Windows 98

    Then click on the Internet Options icon
  • Choose the Connections tab. Select the Setup Button.
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Select the first option, "connect to the internet".
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Select the second option, "set up my connection manually"..
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Now select the first option, "Connect using a dial-up modem".
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Enter Inter.net as the ISP name.
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • The next step is to create a dial-up connection to Inter.net. Below "Telephone number" enter your full 10 digit local dial-up number in the telephone number field, no dashes, no spaces.
    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Your username and password were given to you by Inter.net when you arranged your connection. Enter your full username and password in the proper fields.
    UserName = enter the username you chose followed by @ca.inter.net Use this username for account sign-in and webmail access
    Password = enter the password of your account.

    NOTE: Your user name must be entered using small caps only. Also, you need to enter your password into the Password box. Note that for security reasons your password is displayed as a series of *'s on the screen.

    NOTE: Your password must be entered using small caps only as well.


    Click on the "Next" button to continue.
  • Select the option to add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.
    You have now completed the setup wizard!
    Click on the "Finish" button to complete. Now just open the Inter.net icon and press dial. Once connected, open internet explorer to see webpages.

Windows 7

  • Click on the network icon, it will either be the vertical bars or the computer display. xpmail2.jpg
  • Create a new connection. xpmail3.jpg
  • Set up a dial-up connection. xpmail4.jpg
  • Input the appropriate information. xpmail5.jpg
  • To connect, select the appropriate network icon in your taskbar and choose the dial-up connection to connect to. xpmail6.jpg

 

Mac OS X


Please be aware that there are many different versions of operating systems out there. The following instructions are designed as a guide, and may not be exactly as they appear on your computer.

  • Click on the Apple Menu and click on System Preferences.
  • In the System Preferences window, click on "Network".
  • In the Network window, set the Location to "Automatic."
  • Make sure that next to "Show" it says "Internal Modem." If it does not, select it from the pull-down menu.
  • In the TCP/IP tab, set Configure to "Using PPP".
  • Leave the Domain Name Servers and Search Domain fields empty.
  • Click on the PPP tab.
  • Enter "Inter.net" as service provider name to label your connection.
  • Enter the Inter.net Dial-Up number , your account name (Inter.net username) and password.
  • For advanced options click on "PPP Options..." at the bottom of the menu. These options are used if you would like to set the system to make a dial up connection automatically or use Classic applications while using OS X.
    1. If you would like the computer to connect automatically put a checkmark next to "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications." (If enabled, you can connect to the Internet by double-clicking on IE, Netscape, or other Internet programs.)
    2. For increased stability when using Classic applications with a PPP connection remove the checkmark next to "Use TCP header compression".
    3. When done click on "Ok" button to close the window, saving your changes.
  • Next, click on the "Modem" tab.
  • Place a checkmark next to "Show modem status in menu bar" option near the bottom of this menu (see the red arrow). This will place a telephone icon on the right hand side of the menu bar (the menu bar is the stripe that runs across the top of your screen and holds your menus, clock, etc.).

CONNECT USING SHORTCUT

  • Click on the telephone icon on the right hand side of the menu bar and then click on "Connect".
  • To disconnect, click on this same icon and "Disconnect".

Automatic Connections:

If you enabled automatic connections for TCP/IP applications in step 4A above, connect by double - clicking on the icons for you internet programs --Netscape, Apple Mail.
